Holcomb outscores Risco 14-2 in baseball

RISCO -- The Risco Tigers played host to the Holcomb Hornets on Monday afternoon on the baseball diamond, falling by a score of 14-2, in five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
"We just got outplayed today," Risco coach Brandon Blankenship said. "We're young, and this fall league is a good preparation for the spring season."
Blankenship stated that his squad will look quite different in the spring, as he is getting in four or five players that aren't on the fall squad.
"I've got a few kids that transferred in from other schools," he added. "I've also got some involved in other activities with school. This is giving the other kids a good shot at getting some playing time. It's good for all of them."
Taking the loss on the day for the Tigers was Justin Earnheart, who allowed 14 runs on nine hits, giving up nine walks striking out nine.
For Holcomb, the win gave Sikeston-native head coach Ben Nelson a good glimpse of the future.
"I threw a kid today that's never pitched for me before," Nelson said. "He got the job done, and should be a big help come spring ball. He's our usual first baseman, but I gave him the ball today to see what he had."
Recording the victory for the Hornets was Lucas Fuller, who allowed just two runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in five innings pitched.
Holcomb came out swinging the bats early, putting up three in the first, three in the second and two in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Chad Adams over the left field fence.
"We swung the bats well today," Nelson said. "It's a little more relaxed in the fall season. I like to see what I can work with for the spring season, with district play and all."
Like Blankenship's squad, Nelson's will look different in the spring season as well.
"I've got a few more guys coming out in the spring," he added. "A few kids have transferred in from out-of-town, and I have a few that will be coming back in the spring season as well, that aren't playing right now. We'll look a little different come spring."
Risco's hits were scattered among five hitters on the day, including Mike Davis, Matt Smith, Keith Kimball, Nick White and Josh Long. All five hitters recorded singles. Davis and Smith scored one run apiece for the Tigers.
Holcomb was led at the plate by Chad Adams, who was a triple shy of the cycle. He recorded a single, double, home run, and was hit by a pitch, going 3-for-3 on the day, scoring four runs and collecting 6 RBIs.
Risco will host South Pemiscot on Thursday afternoon.
