Senath girls tournament begins

SENATH -- The Portageville Lady Bulldogs basketball team took on the Senath Lady Lions Monday night in the Bulldog Classic, coming away with a 76-34 victory.

"I give a lot of credit to Senath tonight," said Portageville head coach Eric Ellerbrook. "They came out really forced us to make some adjustments at halftime. We buckled down on defense, and I'm really proud of how the girls responded in the second half."

Portageville was led by Brittney Walker who had 19 points, including 3-6 shooting from the line and two three pointers. Senath's leading scorer was Seleena Neal with 7 points and 3-4 free throw shooting.

Portageville's next game will be Thursday at 7:30 p.m. as they take on the New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles at Senath in the Bulldog Classic.

Chaffee 58, Scott City 56

SCOTT CITY -- The Red Devils edged the Rams as Scott City missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Amber Kirk scored a game-high 26 points for Chaffee.

Stephanie Essner scored 21 points for Scott City (1-2) and and Whitney Tapley added 19 points. Chaffee, playing its season opener, improved to 1-0 while Scott City dropped to 1-2.

FRESHMAN BOYS BASKETBALL

Sikeston 51, Jackson 30

JACKSON -- The Sikeston freshmen boys basketball team was victorious on Monday evening, as they defeated Jackson 51-30. "We came out with a lot of intensity," Sikeston head coach Chris Sarakas said. "We played well and caused a few turnovers."

Sikeston was led in scoring by Darryl Howard, who had 12 points, and by Will Holifield, who hit a three-pointer, and added nine points in the win.
