Briefly: Monroe has huge night as Caruthersville football team routs Malden
CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- Junior Darrell Monroe was a monster for the Caruthersville Tigers Friday night as he rushed for 363 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-6 win over Malden.
Monroe had touchdown runs of 75 yards, 79 and 43 for the Tigers and averaged 19.2 yards per carry on 19 rushes for the game.
The Tigers (1-1), who are ranked No. 8 in the most recent Class 2 poll, scored first on a 10-yard quarterback run by Tyler Grissom before the end of the first quarter.
The Green Wave (1-1) knotted the game up at 6-6 on a 63-yard touchdown reception by senior Romello McCoy from frehsman Chapen Riley.
Monroe ran in his first touchdown with 2:57 left in the first half to lead 12-6 at the break. Monroe then rushed in the second play of the second half from 79 yards out to go up 18-6. After Malden lost a fumble, Monroe rumbled in the ball from 43 yards out on the first play of the ensuing drive.
The Tigers forced four turnovers total in the second half as they shut out the Green Wave from scoring again.
Late in the game, Caruthersville freshman Rodrick Jones ran in an 85-yard touchdown and then with 3:03 to play, senior Myron Woods intercepted Riley and scored from 40 yards out.
Caruthersville totaled 511 yards offense on the night
McCoy, who sat out the second half with a leg injury, totaled 222 all-purpose yards including 159 on 12 rushes. Riley threw for 105 yards but was 6-of-20.
