Portal, not so much NIL, having major impact on juco hoops (4/23/24)There has been no shortage of stories published regarding the implementation of the new NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) philosophy within intercollegiate athletics over the past couple of seasons. However, recently-hired Gulf State Community College men’s basketball coach, and Advance native, Lane Below, said in his four years of coaching at the junior college level, the NIL isn’t a major issue.

Today's moment has been years in the making for mature, driven Lane Below (4/22/24)In 2009, most teenagers were obsessed with Miley Cyrus, beginning to get into Taylor Swift and Facebook (before the old farts ruined it), and spent hours honing their sports skills, not necessarily on the diamonds and courts across America, but in front of their TV screens playing Wii Sports. People who knew Lane Below could see even then, as a seventh grader at Advance Junior High, that he was different.

Young Advance catcher providing bright spot in long spring season (4/9/24)There hasn’t been an overwhelming amount of positivity surrounding the Advance High School varsity baseball season this spring, as the (very) young Hornes have labored to a 2-8 mark, and Tuesday’s outing against Bloomfield was no different. The Wildcats took advantage of seven Advance defensive mistakes and earned a 13-4 win, which was the team’s fourth consecutive victory. However, if Advance can feel good about anything this season, thus far, it certainly can be the play of sophomore catcher Jameson Hamlin.

Athletic, talented Cline to ink with Mineral Area SB (4/3/24)Today will certainly be a better day for Advance High School senior softball player Kaylee Cline than Tuesday was. Having said that, as good as Cline has been for the Class 1 No. 5-ranked Hornets this spring, Tuesday’s tough day in a 13-3 loss at Class 1 No. 7-ranked Holcomb will certainly be an outlier for Cline and her teammates.

Bernie BB makes 'routine plays' in rout of Advance (4/2/24)BERNIE – The Bernie High School varsity baseball program hasn’t had a losing season in over 15 spring seasons (perhaps even longer, but that is as far back as MSHSAA publishes records), so making a mistake against it will prove costly. Pitching to be focus in scintillating Bernie-Advance SB match-up (4/1/24)Veteran Bernie High School softball coach Brad Botsch has a bit of a luxury on his hands, as compared to many softball coaches. The Mules have a solid one-two punch in sophomores Mikalyn Kirkwood and Blair Pleimling on the mound that they can unleash on opponents, and Botsch may need to do just that today when his team takes on unbeaten Advance/Bell City (5-0) at 4:30 p.m. in Bernie. “(Mikalyn and Blair) have both been pretty solid,” Botsch said of his two arms this season.
