Lucas Nutt hired to coach at Senath-Hornersville
Southeast Missouri State basketball coach Dickey Nutt's sons are both following in their dad's coaching footsteps.
Logan is an assistant at Culver-Stockton College and now Lucas has accepted a position as a P.E. teacher and head basketball coach at Senath-Hornersville High School in Senath, Mo.
"I tried to persuade them not to do it," Dickey Nutt said with a laugh. "But they grew up in an athletic world and that's all we did was play ball and go to games and watch games.
Lucas, who completed his last season of eligibility this year, will receive his degree from Southeast in a few weeks.
He's taking a slightly different path than his brother Logan, who spent the 2012-13 season as a graduate assistant for the Redhawks before accepting his current position.
"I think he kind of jumped around in the last few years and always had one day at a time," Nutt said of Lucas. "He just hadn't really talked about the future and what he wanted to do after graduation and whether he wanted to become a grad assistant somewhere on the college level or to get somewhere and make a salary.
"I think when this job opportunity came up I think he felt like it was too good to pass up after the interview, and I told him he has to do what's in his heart. And it's a great start for him. I think anytime a young guy, 23 years old, is named a head basketball coach I think he deserves a lot of credit for that."
