UPDATED: Lucchesi selected by Padres, Boggetto by Nationals in MLB Draft
Southeast Missouri State left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi became the program's highest draft pick when he was selected by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round as the 114th overall pick of the MLB Draft on Friday afternoon. LHP Galen McSpadden was previously the program's highest draft pick. He was selected by the Padres in the sixth round with the 121st overall pick of the 1974 draft.
Redhawks shortstop Branden Boggetto was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 25th round Saturday with the 754th overall pick. It's the first time since 2012, when both Shae Simmons and Trenton Moses were drafted by the Atlanta Braves, that the Redhawks have had multiple players drafted in the same year.
Lucchesi posted a 10-5 record this season and had an Ohio Valley Conference-best ERA of 2.19.
His 149 strikeouts leads all of Division I baseball and also broke Southeast's single-season record of 130 held by Ryan Spille since 1998 and the OVC's record of 133 set by Tennessee Tech's Todd Kemp in 1986.
He tied Southeast's single-game strikeout record with 17 against Murray State on April 28 and became the program's all-time career strikeout leader during the Redhawks' regional opener against Mississippi State last Friday. He finished his two-year career with 242 strikeouts, surpassing Southeast Hall of Famer Trae Hastings, who had 239 from 1975-78.
Lucchesi became the first player to repeat as the Ohio Valley Conference's Pitcher of the Year this season. He also was named the OVC tournament MVP after pitching a complete-game shutout and recording a save to help the Redhawks' secure their first OVC tournament championship and NCAA Regional berth since 2002.
He became the program's first Louisville Slugger first-team All-American and was also named a third-team All-American by Baseball America.
Boggetto, who started all but his final game at shortstop over the last two years, was a first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection as a senior and second-team pick as a junior.
Boggetto, a four-year starter, hit .339 as a senior with a team-best 18 doubles and four triples. He also tied for the team lead with 61 RBIs. He scored 64 runs and hit five home runs.
He was named to the Brooks Wallace Awards watch list for the nation's top shortstop and was CoSIDA Academic All-District selection this season. He was an ABCA/Rawlings South All-Region second-team selection as a junior.
Boggetto cracked the Top 10 on several career leader lists at Southeast. He ranks fourth in doubles (61), fifth in RBIs (164), seventh in at-bats (777), eighth in total bases (376) and runs scored (158) and ninth in hits (229) and walks (90).
