Gameday blog: Austin Peay at Southeast
If Southeast Missouri State was looking to improve in the red zone, it had mixed results in the first half but still took a 17-0 lead over Austin Peay into the halftime break.
The Redhawks were officially 2 for 3 in the red zone, but once settled for a field goal. They also had a field goal blocked, and pushed the balld down to the Governors 14-yard line but couldn't get the ball spiked before time expired on the second quarter.
Southeast got on the board on its first series of the game, driving 59 yards in 4 minutes, 35 seconds before stalling out at the AP 6-yard line and settling for a 23-yard field goal by Ryan McCrum.
The home side closed out the first half with another 4:35 drive, capped by a 14-yard TD pass from Jesse Hosket to running back Chase Abbington.
McCrum missed a field goal from 22 yards out, but Southeast responded with a 71-yard drive moments later, with Tremane McCullough breaking through the middle of the line for a 22-yard touchdown run.
Will Young leads the Redhawks with 12 carries for 78 yards. McCullough has 71 on the ground.
Hosket is 13 of 16 for 159 yards and a score. Kristian Wilkerson has been his top target, with four receptions for 49 yards. C.J. Curry has 3 for 44 yards.
SEMO has 310 offensive yards through two quarters, including 151 on the ground.
Austin Peay's first two drives went three and out, and its third resulted in an 8-yard punt, as the SEMO defense held the visitors to 119 total yards of offense in the first half, on 30 plays.
Governors quarterback Timarious Mitchell is 8 of 12 for 57 yards. Jared Beard and Kentel Williams had 18 yards apiece to pace the ground game.
Southeast is 3 of 6 on third down in the first half; Austin Peay had held opponents 1 for 22 on third down over the last two weeks, including against Jacksonville State.
The Southeast Missouri State football team will look to snap a two-game losing streak when it faces winless Austin Peay at 1 p.m. Saturday at Houck Stadium.

Southeast (2-5, 2-2 Ohio Valley Conference) enters the game two weeks removed from falling to Tennessee Tech in a 21-20 heartbreaker. The Redhawks' defense performed well, holding quarterback Michael Birdsong to 170 yards passing, while senior running back Will Young had a big day on the ground, finishing with his third 100-yard rushing game of the season.
