SEMO's Denzel Mahoney earns second straight OVC weekly honor
Southeast Missouri State men’s basketball guard Denzel Mahoney garnered weekly honors from the Ohio Valley Conference on Monday for the second week in a row.
The 6-foot-4 Mahoney was named OVC Co-Freshman of the Week along with Eastern Kentucky’s Asante Gist.
In a pair of wins last week, Mahoney averaged a team-leading 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game while shooting 53.3 percent (8 of 15) from the floor, including 50 percent (4 of 8) from behind the arc. Mahoney shot 90 percent (9 of 10) from the free-throw line, where he currently ranks fifth in the conference with 82.2 percent (74 of 90).
Against SIU Edwardsville on Thursday, Mahoney reached the 20-point plateau for the third time this season, finishing with a team-high 20 points and six rebounds while shooting 3 of 6 from 3-point range. He added nine points, four rebounds and two assists in a win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday. The freshman from Oviedo, Florida, has scored in double figures in seven of his last eight games.
Belmont forward Evan Bradds was named Player of the Week, while Murray State guard Jonathan Stark earned honors for Newcomer of the Week.
