With a season record of 14 wins and just as many defeats, the Woodland High School volleyball squad can’t claim to have a winning season today. However, one would be hard-pressed to state that the Cardinals have not been successful. Of those 14 losses, nine have been in matches that Woodland won at least one set while five have been defeats in five-set thrillers.

The adage is that “Defense wins championships,” and Bloomfield High School volleyball coach Brasley Conner is aware of that.

In the MSHSAA volleyball postseason, the margin for errors shrinks dramatically, particularly as the pressure builds for a team.

The Advance High School volleyball program has averaged over 31 victories during a six-year stretch in which it has won five MSHSAA Class 1 state championships. This season, the Hornets have labored to an 18-11-2 mark, which includes defeats in five of their last eight matches. However, don’t include veteran Advance coach Erin Hoffman among those overly concerned about those numbers as the postseason looms.
