Notre Dame wrestling hosts Notre Dame Quad to open season
The Notre Dame Bulldogs hosted the Notre Dame Quad to begin the 2022-23 season on Tuesday night at Notre Dame Regional High School.
The match featured the host Bulldogs, New Madrid County Central, Kennett and Valle Catholic, all Missouri schools.
Bulldogs coach Garrett Watson said he thought his team had a solid performance to start the season.
“We had some matches that didn’t really go our way,” Watson said. “But we showed that we are on the right path to improving.”
Watson said the Bulldogs have placed an emphasis on their conditioning.
“The reason we run so much and push so hard in practice is so we can perform on the mat and make it an easier night,” Watson said.
New Madrid County Central went 2-1, picking up wins over Notre Dame and Kennett.
“I was pretty pleased,” Eagles coach Jerry Winberry said. “We were sloppy on some things but we just got our football guys in from the playoffs so we haven’t had that many practices. I thought our conditioning was pretty good and I thought we looked pretty good overall.”
With NMCC, Notre Dame and Valley being district opponents, Winberry knew the quad would be important.
“It’s important to come out here and see where we rank up with everybody,” Winberry said. “I thought we wrestled hard tonight.”
Watson was pleased with the performances of freshmen Adam Cork and Parker Lemmonds.
“They showed a really good performance,” Watson said. “Especially with them being freshman in their first year of high school wrestling.”
Watson felt both Cork and Lemmonds did a good job of setting the tone for the team.
“If you get wins early the momentum starts to build,” Watson said.
Notre Dame is back in action on Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to the Westminster Tournament in St. Louis.
NMCC is back in action on Saturday at the Affton Wrestling Invitational in Affton.
