Lady Royals rally to defeat Caruthersville
BROSELEY — The Twin Rivers Lady Royals bounced back with a late rally to land a win on their home turf.
Despite trailing 10-2 in the fifth inning, the Lady Royals caught a boost midway through to secure a 14-12 victory over Caruthersville on Friday at Twin Rivers High School. Though the Lady Royals got off to a slow start, collecting 19 hits to Caruthersville’s seven was the difference-maker.
Twin Rivers junior Reese Crismon said they started off pretty rough, but she was glad the Lady Royals stuck with it and came together to get the win.
“At some point during the game, we started to realize that we should be winning,” Crismon said. “I feel like people got kind of mad, and it got under their skin, and it was like we needed to pick it up. I haven't pitched in a game in a while, so it was kind of tough for me, but I stayed with it, and we got the dub.”
Caruthersville got on the board in the second inning after a single, scoring two runs.
Caruthersville added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after a triple and a committed error from the Lady Royals to bring in two more runs.
Caruthersville continued to thrive by scoring five runs on two hits in the top of the fifth inning to take a 10-2 lead. The Lady Royals would begin to rally back by scoring five runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alexis Parson hit a solo home run to left field, Kelis Miller drew a walk, scoring one run, Ryleigh Blasingain was struck by a pitch, driving in a run and Anne Mittelstadt singled, scoring two runs.
After struggling to get across the plate for most of the game, the Lady Royals flipped the script in the bottom of the sixth, scoring seven runs on seven hits to take a 14-10 lead. Addysen Whitlow was the leading hitter in the inning by connecting with a single to bring in two runs.
Crismon opened the game for the Lady Royals at the mound. The starting pitcher gave up seven hits and 12 runs (six earned) over seven innings, striking out nine and walking seven. Caruthersville allowed 19 hits and 14 runs over six innings, striking out seven and walking two.
The Lady Royals tallied 19 hits in the game. Katie Acre, Whitlow, and Crismon each collected three hits for Twin Rivers Varsity Lady Royals. Blasingain went 1-for-2 at the plate as she led the team with three runs batted in. Parson, Layla Tompkins, Gail Suiter and Mittelstadt each collected multiple hits for Twin Rivers.
Lady Royals coach Casey Parson said the team had some tough battles lately, but they have played some great ball.
“They've had a long week playing four games against some strong teams,” Parson said. “I believe they figured out that getting past Caruthersville wouldn’t be easy. We stayed with that mindset for most of the game, but we began building momentum when we started to hit the ball in the fourth inning. We caught a break today because I don’t believe we were ready to play, but we can’t be upset about getting the win, and I’m glad we pulled it together.”
The Lady Royals will travel to Greenville for their next game on Monday.
