The South Pemiscot High School softball squad saw its three-game win streak halted on Monday in a 17-8 loss to Caruthersville in Steele. However, that defeat didn’t diminish how strong of play that senior Abigail Edwards exhibited on the mound and at the plate in a pair of games that day.

Edwards was very impressive in an 11-6 win over Portageville (8-6) earlier in the day before the Bulldogs (6-8) fell to the Tigers (5-8).

In the opening game, South Pemsicot scored eight runs in the fifth inning after trailing 2-0, and Edwards, who has battled through a “sore knee” this spring, according to Bulldog coach Lance Crawford, controlled Portageville from the mound.

“She’s a good pitcher,” Crawford said recently. “She hardly ever walks anybody.”

Edwards is the lone Bulldog senior who is in the everyday lineup, and she only gave up three hits to Portageville, as well as not giving up an earned run or a walk while striking out nine batters.

Offensively, she had one of South Pemiscot’s 12 hits to go with a walk.

“She is gutting through (the injury),” Crawford said.

South Pemiscot junior Ayleighonna Farmer paced her team with a couple of hits, including a home run, to go with two RBI and a couple of runs scored against Portageville.

Junior Khyla Edwards-Hunt added two hits in the win to go with two runs and two RBI while sophomore Phoenix Simmons (two hits, two RBI, two runs, one walk), junior Mataiya Phillips (two hits, one run, two RBI), junior Gracyn Trammel (two hits, one run, one RBI), junior Mia Gonzalez (one hit, one run, one RBI), and sophomore Mollie Moore (one walk, one run) were also productive.

Trammel connected for a double while Simmons hit a three-bagger.

Gonzalez, Moore, Phillips, and Simmons each had a stolen base.

Simmons worked the final two innings on the mound and gave up three hits while walking one and striking out one.

Portageville was led by junior Ja’niya Smith, who had two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Smith had a double and a home run while senior Laney Stone stole four bases.

Against Caruthersville, the Bulldogs led 1-0 before the Tigers scored seven combined runs over three innings and another 10 in their final at-bat.

Edwards had a double and an RBI while Simmons (three hits, two runs, two RBI) and Edwards-Hunt (two hits, two runs, two RBI) had productive games.

Edwards-Hunt had two triples while Trammel, Moore, and Simmons also hit triples.

Farmer and Phillips notched stolen bases.

On the mound, Edwards threw five innings and gave up just one earned run and one walk while striking out six.

Simmons didn’t allow an earned run in two innings thrown, walked one Tiger, and struck out four.

Caruthersville freshman Mollie Price had two hits to lead her team to go with two runs scored and a pair of RBI while freshman Kady Bethune (two hits, one run), sophomore Dallas Hayes (two hits, two runs), and junior Kellijo Hudgens (two hits, two runs, one RBI) also contributed.

Price had a double while sophomore Bryleigh White stole a base.

Emma Baldwin threw a complete game in the win, walked just one batter and struck out five.

Caruthersville hosted Clarkton (0-6) and Delta (Deering) (3-3) on Tuesday.

Portageville, which had won five consecutive games before falling to South Pemiscot, fell 10-3 at Neelyville (3-1) on Tuesday and will host a doubleheader on Thursday against Clarkton (4:30 p.m.) and Senath-Hornersville/Southland (5-2-1) at 6:30 p.m.

South Pemiscot will visit Bernie (5-6) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
