Camels blow by Bulldogs on the road
GIDEON, Mo. - The Campbell Camels baseball squad took to the road Wednesday and grabbed a win in six innings here against the Bulldogs, 19-8.
The Bulldogs fought troubles on the mound all afternoon with four relievers stepping in for starter Landon Weaver and hitting eight Camels batters.
Weaver had a better day at bat than he did toeing the rubber. The starter pitched one total inning, committed four errors, allowed four runs (all earned), struck out two and walked three. Weaver hit four batters during his Wednesday tenure.
The starter was relieved by Pacy Lowry, who allowed six runs on three hits, committed six errors, walked three and hit two batters.
The Bulldogs' Brayden Knapp stepped to the mound from his starting spot behind the plate and pitched long enough to allow three runs on two hits, committed three errors, walked one and struck out one. Two Camels' batters took one for the team from Knapp.
Gideon's Carson Grissom served more time on the mound than the rest, in for three and one-third innings. Grissom faced 27 Camels at the plate, gave up seven runs on six hits, committed six errors walked nine, struck out two and hit one batter.
Finally, Brayden Hollobaugh was in for a fraction of an inning and struck out two during his service.
In total the Gideon pitching staff allowed 19 runs on 11 hits, committed 19 errors, walked 16 and struck out seven on the day.
Although the Camels were first to light up the board when left fielder Kennen Siebert drew a walk and scored a run, the Bulldogs' first baseman Hayden Lacewell ripped a triple and scored three runs in the bottom of the first, putting Gideon on top 3-2. Lacewell led the Dogs in RBIs with three to his credit.
That lead cratered in the top of the second when Campbell bats went thermal and Gideon's pitching arms all but froze. The Camels scored eight runs on four hits to take the lead 10-3 and never look back.
Campbell's catcher, Carson Weidenbenner, followed Lacewell's triple with one of his own and knocked in three in the process. Weidenbenner went two-for-five and led the Camels in RBIs, chalking up four.
Fast forward to the top of the third inning and Weidenbenner hits into a fielder's choice, right fielder Logan Townsend walks, and starting pitcher Ben Rowland singles, each scoring a run and increasing the Gideon deficit.
Campbell relief pitcher Jared Jennings was in for nearly the entire game and earned the win. Jennings gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out 10 Bulldogs with no walks. He relieved Rowland, who gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits.
The Camels' Jackson Melvin went three-for-four at the plate Wednesday. Tanner Smart, Ben Rowland and Sam Bunting all tallied hits for Campbell totaling 11 during the outing.
Bunting walked three times and Siebert walked four, to lead the Camels in base on balls.
The Bulldogs totaled 10 hits with Lacewell going three-for-three and leading the pack in RBIs. Weaver tallied three hits and Knapp reached base twice on hits.
Campbell improves its season record to 8-7 while Gideon falls to 2-7.
