SIKESTON — The future of Sikeston basketball was on full display at the YMCA Tuesday, as dozens of young Bulldogs dribbled, passed, and shot their way through a high-energy camp designed to develop their skills and love for the game.

Led by Sikeston varsity coaches and players, the four-day camp, which concludes Thursday, is broken into two sessions – first through fourth grade in the morning, and fifth through eighth grade in the afternoon.

"We have had a great turnout," said Sikeston coach Gregg Holifield. "We want to give the kids an opportunity to work on their skills and develop. They have been working hard and have done a very good job."

The camp focuses on the fundamentals of basketball, with drills designed to improve dribbling, passing, shooting, and defensive skills. But it's not just about the X's and O's.

"We also want the kids to enjoy it; they all seem to have a lot of fun and a good time," Holifield added.

A highlight for many campers is the opportunity to learn from current and former Sikeston players, some of whom have gone on to play college basketball.

“The kids always enjoy being around those guys and it is very beneficial for them,” Holifield said. “We want to help them get better at every facet of the game.”

Tyler Morgan, a 12-year-old with a scrappy style and a relentless motor, wasn't afraid to dive for loose balls or challenge bigger opponents. He listened intently to the coaches' instructions, determined to improve his game.

“It was fun,” Morgan said. “We scrimmaged and did a bunch of drills. It teaches us a lot about how to play basketball and how to get better.”

Brady James, 14, focused his energy on mastering the fundamentals. He practiced dribbling drills with determination, pushing himself to improve with each repetition.

"We've spent a lot of time on ball handling," he said. "I think everyone here needs to get better at it. I hope to get better.”

The camp still has two days remaining, offering ample opportunity for young players to learn and grow.

“Everyone is still welcome to come on out,” Holifield concluded, extending a warm invitation to all aspiring Bulldogs.
