Babe Ruth World Series Roundup Day 3: Kelso wins in walk-off style, improves to 3-0

Kelso (Wa.) edged Lexington (Ky.) 4-3 to become the first 3-0 team in the Babe Ruth World Series on Sunday, Aug. 11, at Capaha Field in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Boston Caron secured the win for the Pacific Northwest representatives with a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 7th. The catcher powered Kelso with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs.

Zach Edwards added the other run for Kelso on an RBI single in the fourth.

Lexington tied the game 3-3 in the sixth inning by capitalizing on Kelso’s defensive mistakes and scoring two runs on a walk, a balk and an error.

Lexington scored its first run of the game on an RBI single by Giancarlo Gonzalez in the third inning. The Ohio Valley reps collected seven hits but only singles.

Rogan Stanley and Owen Combs each threw three innings on the mound for Kelso, combining to allow three runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Noah Newton threw the final inning for Kelso, giving up one hit and striking out two.

Brody Rodgers started on the mound for Lexington, allowing three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts over five innings.

Going 3-0 certainly moves Kelso past pool play. They will rest on Monday and take on Alabama on Tuesday, Aug. 13 looking to clinch Pool C.

Stamford, CT 15, Aruba 0

Patrick Leonard and Cody Baker each drove in three runs on three hits to lead Stamford (Ct.) to a dominating 15-0 win over Aruba. Leonard and Nikolas Christon each hit a triple while Armando Quito hit a double to highlight Stamford’s 12-hit barrage. Evan Rossi allowed only two hits through four shutout innings. Stamford is now 2-1 entering Monday’s game against the Southeast Tropics on Monday.

Manassas, VA 16, Altoona, PA 4

Manassas rode a nine-run fourth inning rally to victory over Altoona. Both Donovan Boles and Eli Laughman hit a home run and a double to lead Manassas at the plate. Boles went 3-for-4 missing only a triple for the cycle, while Laughman went 2-for-2 with three runs and a team-high four RBIs. Gavin Bell led Altoona with two hits and two RBIs.

Australia 9, Netherlands 6

Geoffrey Kerr hit a three-run home run in the first inning to lead the Drop Bears to a 9-6 win over the Netherlands. Kerr also stole home in the second inning and hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to round out Australia’s scoring. J’ley Bentura hit a double and a triple to lead the Dutch at the plate.

Puerto Rico 18, Mid-County 4

Justin Garcia powered Puerto Rico by hitting a home run for the second consecutive day. His two-run double in the first inning and three-run homer in the second inning gave Puerto Rico an early lead that they never relinquished.
