Babe Ruth World Series Roundup Day 2: Puerto Rico rebounds from opening-night embarrassment
A lesser team would’ve taken an 18-0 drubbing by the Southeast Tropics in the Babe Ruth World Series’ opening slate of games as an early end of a run.
Puerto Rico was not ready to give up, as the team rebounded with a 5-3 win over Mountain View (Ca.) on Saturday at Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Justin Garcia powered Puerto Rico with a two-run home run highlighting a four-run rally in the third inning.
Fabian Alers started the game on the mound for Puerto Rico. He allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts over five innings to earn the win.
Puerto Rico became the first international team to earn a win in the Babe Ruth World Series, but they wouldn’t be the only team on Saturday.
Mexico 11, Salina, KS 0
Mexico rebounded from Friday’s loss in a big way with an 11-0 win over Salina on Saturday. Fernando Mendez powered the lineup with two hits, including a triple, and five RBIs. Jesus Rodriguez started the game on the mound for Mexico and went four scoreless innings allowing only three hits with eight strikeouts.
Alabama 13, Lexington, KY 4
The Raw Dogs rode an eight-run third-inning rally to victory. Jake Devalk went 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. The Raw Dogs overwhelmed Mexico pitching with 17 hits, including three doubles. Fuller Musgrove went 3-for-5 with an RBI single for the Raw Dogs.
Kelso, WA 10, Canada 0
Riley Young did it all for Kelso in their 10-0 win against Canada. Young set the tone at the plate with a two-run single in the first inning. On the mound, he threw a complete game shutout with four hits allowed and eight strikeouts. Brett Martywicz led Kelso at the plate with a 4-for-4 performance including a double and a triple
Mid-County, TX 8, Stamford, CT 6
Patrick Leonard hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning, but it wasn’t enough for Stamford to come back against Mid-County. The Texas representatives rode a six-run sixth inning to victory, highlighted by a two-run double from Jaxson Sylvester.
Altoona, PA 15, Australia 6
Nick Kraft drove in four runs on two hits to lead Altoona to victory over the Drop Bears from down under. Gavin Bell went 3-for-4 and Caden Gibbons each went 3-for-3 including two RBIs and a triple. Bailey McDonough led Australia with two hits and two RBIs.
