PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. — Flipping a new page in its football history with a new coach at the helm, Portageville is eager to write a chapter filled with success and excitement.

The Bulldogs have a strong foundation of returning talent and a promising group of newcomers, and they’re ready to prove they still belong among the best teams in the region.

“We’ve been very consistent as a group this summer,” said first-year Portageville coach Luke Rayfield. “We have had great leadership from older guys with younger guys getting quality reps in.”

While many may expect the team to take a step back after the graduation of a talented and celebrated senior class, Portageville has had several standout moments this summer, particularly in the weight room.

“We had a very successful summer in the weight room,” Rayfield said.  Once again it came down to great leadership from older guys, really reinforcing what we are about as a program.”

One of the most memorable moments came at the Dexter 7-on-7 Tournament, where the Bulldogs’ linemen impressed in the ‘Big Man Skills Competition.’ Their performance showcased the team’s physicality, athleticism, and teamwork.

“It was a really cool moment,” Rayfield said.

The Bulldogs are led by a talented group of returning players, including a strong core of offensive linemen and playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Seniors Zach Lovins, Owen Roberts and junior Eli Wheeler provide a solid foundation for the offense, while senior quarterback Rylan Partin, senior running back/wide receiver Houston Partin, senior wide receiver Xayvion Bogan, sophomore wide receiver Parker Laws, junior running back Antonio Hickenbottom, and junior quarterback Max Warren are dynamic playmakers who can make big plays.

“We’re very fortunate to have offensive linemen who are experienced and bring leadership and athleticism,” Rayfield said. “We also have a lot of guys we to get the ball in their hands.”

On defense, seniors Cross Howard, Jacob Altice, Jayquan Bogan, and junior Maddox Morgan are key contributors who set the tone for the team.

“These guys bring great intensity to that side of the ball and fly around all over the field,” Rayfield said. “But there is no shortage of young guys ready to contribute, to be ready on Friday nights if their number is called.”

Rayfield believes that the Bulldogs’ biggest strength is their unity and commitment to each other. He emphasizes that the team has focused on internal improvement throughout the offseason, rather than dwelling on external factors. This “Us vs. Us” mentality has fostered a strong team culture and a relentless work ethic.

While the coach doesn’t claim a clear-cut advantage in any one aspect, he highlights the team’s overall balance and depth as key strengths with players who can contribute at multiple positions, giving them flexibility and adaptability on both sides of the ball.

“Since our first team meeting, they have been all in and that’s all I can ask of them,” he said. “They are adapting to some new things but they have taken every bit of coaching with intensity and integrity.”

The Bulldogs have all the ingredients for a successful season. With a talented roster, a strong work ethic, and a positive team culture, they are poised to make a statement and compete for a championship. The future is bright for the Bulldogs, and their fans can’t wait to see what they can accomplish.
