New Madrid spoils Kennett's homecoming with 47-30 victory
KENNETT, Mo. - Homecoming and class reunions were the key celebrations this weekend at Kennett High School, however New Madrid Central Eagles came to spoil the festivities.
After three hours and 12 minutes of play, New Madrid beat Kennett 47-30 for their second win of the season.
It was a slow start, with neither team giving up any points in the first quarter.
The Eagles found momentum late in the second quarter after a 25 yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Nolan Mungle to senior Erik Tillmon.
New Madrid went on to score two more touchdowns with three minutes left in the first half to give them a 19-0 cushion over Kennett.
Kennett was not able to cover the gap as New Madrid continued to score every time the Indians made a punch.
The second half saw a lot more action, starting with a 15 yard rushing touchdown by New Madrid’s Charlie Resonno to make the score 26-0. It was his second of the night after scoring a one yard rushing touchdown in the first half.
Sacory Ray from Kennett gets things going for the Indians with a pick six and a two point conversion. He helps close the lead slightly to 26-8.
Despite the defensive lift and touchdown from Ray, New Madrid immediately responded with a 80 yard touchdown off the kick return. It was scored by Tillman, for his second touchdown of the evening making it a 33-8 ball game.
Kennett punched right back with a drive leading them to New Madrid’s five yard line. A touchdown pass from Ty Jones was caught by Karson Manley for his first touchdown of the evening and his first touchdown of the season. He helps them close in on the lead with a two point conversion making the score 33-16.
Immediately after, Jayden Williams from New Madrid made a catch and ran 75 yards for another Eagle’s touchdown. He makes the score 40-16.
Kennett came back into the red zone after a 49 yard pass by Jones to senior Caleb Duncan.
Duncan went on to catch a 10 yard touchdown pass from Jones as well to bring the score to 40-22. This is also the most touchdowns Kennett has scored this year.
Resonno scored his third touchdown of the night in the opening play of the fourth quarter and extended the Eagles lead to 47-22.
Jone responded with a 70 yard touchdown pass to D’Madrius Anthony and two point conversion bringing the score to 47-30 with three minutes left in the match. However, the Eagles held on for the victory to raise their record to 2-4.
Jones had over 284 yards for his best passing game of the season so far.
Despite his efforts, Kennett now falls to 0-6. They will face Dexter next week on Friday, Oct. 11 for their rivalry Pink out game. New Madrid will travel back to Dunklin County to face Malden next week.
