PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. — Xayvion Bogan wouldn’t let a broken collarbone sideline him for long.

After a grueling six-week recovery from a broken collarbone, the Portageville standout returned to the gridiron with a vengeance, leading his team to a dominant 53-8 victory over Malden on Oct. 4.

“It happened for a reason,” Bogan said. “It showed me that I needed to get bigger and gain more muscle. But watching my teammates out there without me also made me want to rush.”

Although the rehab process was challenging, Bogan knew that rushing the recovery process could have long-term consequences.

He took his time and focused on healing, knowing that his patience would be rewarded. And rewarded he was. When he finally returned to the field, he was a playmaker extraordinaire, immediately making his presence felt.

“It was a statement and says a lot about what he made of,” said Portageville coach Luke Rayfield. “He has taken the process with maturity and one day at a time. He never missed a practice so he was able to keep up his mental reps, so when the time came, he was ready.”

When Bogan finally stepped back onto the field, he did so with explosive energy.

On the Bulldogs’ first offensive play, he left defenders in his dust and raced 45 yards for a touchdown.

“I feel like I played how I should be playing,” Bogan said. “Scoring on my first carry back on the field was awesome and it was a big moment and gave us a lot of momentum early in the game.”

The injury could have derailed his season, but he refused to let that happen. The touchdown sent a clear message, Bogan was back, and his combination of speed and athleticism made him a nightmare for the defense.

“It says a lot about a guy that can be out that long and then take it to the house the first time he touches the ball,” Rayfield said. “He gives us another weapon, but it’s also what his presence can do for our other playmakers.”

Bogan’s impact extended beyond the ground game. He also contributed to the passing attack with a 39-yard touchdown reception, marking only the second touchdown pass of the season for Portageville.

Before Bogan’s return, the Bulldogs stumbled finding a rhythm in their passing game. However, his comeback has added a new dimension to their offense, making it more versatile and threatening.

“When Xay [Bogan] went down we knew we lost a big part of our passing game and offense in general,” said senior lineman Owen Roberts. “We had struggled on our passing game because of how big of a part he played in it.

“When he returned, it gave the team a boost,” Roberts continued. “Having him back on the field made us improve a lot on a lot of things.”

Bogan’s talents were not confined to the offensive side of the ball as he intercepted a pass to help seal the victory. Also, a defensive cornerstone for the team, Bogan is a reliable and consistent performer who makes big plays when the team needs them the most.

Bogan’s athletic prowess is complemented by his veteran leadership qualities and dedication, qualities that have not gone unnoticed by his coach.

“His biggest strength is his maturity,” Rayfield said. “He never waivers about the process, whether it’s football, basketball, or baseball, he’s a student of every sport. He is cutthroat, he doesn’t talk, he just plays. It should be noted that he is also an outstanding student. He has a skill set that translates to the collegiate level and could contribute to a program in some capacity.”

As Bogan continues to excel in his athletic endeavors, his personal goal remains clear.

“I just want to do what’s best for the team so we can reach the goals,” he concluded.
