Missouri Media Rankings, Oct. 21: Marionville drops, St. Vincent claims crown

With just one week left in the regular season, months worth of persistence has finally paid off for one local squad.

After two months of sitting at the No. 2 spot, St. Vincent has finally risen to take the crown of No. 1 in Class 1 from reigning state champion Marionville.

The battles of unbeatens at the top of the poll has brought some interesting moments in that time, but the Indians’ dreams of a state title are starting to come into view entering the postseason.

Similarly in Class 3, Dexter maintains its position as the No. 3 team in Class 3, throttling Park Hills Central to earn a little more respect there.

The Rebels maintained their ranked status, coming in at the bottom of the poll in a T-9 position.

Caruthersville stays ranked No. 7 in Class 2, hitting a plateau after rising multiple spots in each of the prior two weeks.

Finally, in Class 5, Cape Central keeps its position at No. 8 in the latest poll after dismantling Lift For Life at home last week, one of Central’s top wins of the year.

Central shares a district with Cardinal Ritter, the only team to be named a unanimous No. 1 this week, though Class 2 was close.

After Valle Catholic clobbered No. 2 Bowling Green in a 2-versus-3 road matchup, the Warriors rose to that same position and even received a first-place vote.

That, of course, is good news for St. Vincent fans after the Indians managed a decisive win in their annual rivalry game at Valle back in Week 2.

Jackson, now 6-2, continues to go without receiving votes. District mate Seckman rises to No. 7 while the Indians pass Lindbergh in district standing after a Flyer loss.

Seckman @ 7 is a joke. Doesn't anyone look at their ridiculously easy schedule?

I agree, teams should be ranked by their schedule and the teams they play. Jackson lost to Cardinal Ritter,the best team in the entire state, and to Edwardsville ranked #17 in the state of Illinois.

The two team Jackson played that were any good you you lost by 30 plus points. Other than that who in your schedule is good?

Dexter although impressive, lacking playoff experience

Valle steamrolling towards state championship now (would beat St. Vincent handily today)

@Caniplay I see Jackson plays Festus this Friday. From what I've read from up North they're very good on defense. Do you know anyone else with a tougher schedule around here.. Seems to everyone has played a fairly week schedule early in the year

What has changed at Valle to indicate in any way that they would "handily" beat SV? They scored 7...on home turf...with a full compliment of starters.

With 15 state championships and 5 state runnerups Valle is a playoff monster in November and December!

The private schools do have an unfair advantage. What are the negatives of putting them in their own class??

I talked to the former communications director at MSHSAA, Jason West, about this last winter and I believe he said that it’s always been a possibility, but the last time it was put to a vote (2017 or so, I believe?) schools voted against it. I’m sure it’ll come up on the ballot again sooner or later.

Cole I've heard rumors a lot of the St. Louis schools are starting to stop scheduling these parochial schools who recruit. Any truth to that?

What are the advantages parochial schools have over public schools? If you're referring to "recruiting", those situations aren't common enough (if they exist at all) to make a sweeping change and likely why the schools will never be separated for the purposes of sports. Is it the contention that a program like Valle has been a perennial powerhouse because they've recruited a handful of players? Those are sour grapes. If that were the case, wouldn't colleges be clamoring to recruit those same players? they are not. You can formulate your own opinions, but the "they win because they cheat" is a weak argument, at best.

@handfulofhappiness.. Yes "Recruiting" happens a lot especially at the bigger schools! Go watch CBC, DeSmet, Cardinal Ritter, Rockhurst or even Chaminade(when they're good). These schools recruit from all over the country which gives an unfair advantage to public schools.

Valle is one of the very few cases where the kids are all homegrown. Put when they got bumped up to Class 3 they didn't win like they did in Class 1 and 2...

To think the parochial schools don’t recruit is pretty naive. Cardinal Ritter and CBC are perfect examples, many kids wouldn’t be at those schools for any other reason than to compete in their respective sports.

And yes the local private schools also recruit. It’s not always the coach that does the recruiting. Parents who want to win will recruit also.
