Watson breaks 1,000-set milestone, becomes Sikeston’s all-time leader
SIKESTON — Last week, in a match at New Madrid County Central, Kennedy Watson surpassed 1,000 career sets, a milestone that not only cements her legacy but also crowns her as the all-time leader in sets at Sikeston.
The atmosphere was electric as the Lady Eagles graciously paused the match to honor Watson’s achievement on Oct. 17.
“It was very special,” Watson said. “I knew I was going to get it, but I wasn’t sure how close I was. I definitely wasn’t expecting them to stop the match and make a whole big deal about it.
“I’m very proud of myself for reaching this accomplishment,” she continued. “It’s something that I have worked hard for and I’m just thankful that I finally achieved it.”
Watson has recorded over 400 sets during her senior season, and it’s not just a personal victory but a beacon of inspiration for her teammates and aspiring athletes in the community. Her leadership and performance have been pivotal in Sikeston’s recent successes, including a four-game winning streak that has set a positive trajectory for the team as they prepare for the district tournament.
“[Watson] has been a joy to work with,” said Sikeston volleyball coach Steve Beydler. “She’s a great captain and all the players look up to her. She has a smart head on her shoulders as far as volleyball IQ. I couldn’t be more pleased with that.”
