FARMINGTON, Mo. — Sikeston kicked off its playoff campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cape Central in the opening round of the MSHSAA Class 4, District 1 Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 2.

The Bulldogs (14-6-1), led by multiple standout performances, capitalized on key moments to secure the victory over the Tigers (10-9-0).

“ I was extremely proud of the boys’ defensive efforts,” said Sikeston coach Gabe Dement. “They fought to victory against a highly motivated squad.”

The match began with both teams locked in a tactical stalemate, as neither side managed to break the deadlock in the first 22 minutes.

However, with 17:30 left until halftime, Tristan Wiggins delivered a crucial ball into the box. The ensuing chaos saw PJ Farmer and Cape Central's goalkeeper leap simultaneously for possession. Farmer's determination paid off as he headed the ball into the net, giving Sikeston a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs extended the advantage just before halftime, thanks to Wiggins' keen eye for an opportunity. Spotting the chance for an Olimpico—a rare feat of scoring directly from a corner kick—Wiggins executed the play perfectly, sending Sikeston into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Cape Central emerged from halftime with a more aggressive approach.

Sikeston's defense, however, stood firm, repelling numerous attacks until Cape Central finally found the net from a corner kick with 15 minutes remaining, narrowing the score to 2-1.

With time winding down, Cape Central pressed hard, but Sikeston's defense, led by goalkeeper Barrett Stokes, held firm. Stokes' crucial double save late in the game sealed the Bulldogs' victory.

Sikeston will take on Farmington (12-6-0) in the semifinals on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m.

The Knights defeated the Bulldogs earlier this season, 4-3 on penalty kicks.

“We played very well against them last time,” Dement concluded. “We believe that if we play well we can compete well and potentially move on to the championship match, but we’ll need a high level of effort from everyone.”
