COLUMBIA, Mo. — East Prairie once again etched its name into Missouri cheerleading history, capturing the Class 2A Large Division State Championship title for the second consecutive year.

The victory, celebrated on November 2 at the University of Missouri’s Hearnes Center in Columbia, marks a significant achievement for the team and solidified its position as a powerhouse in the state.

“I am so proud of our team and the incredible hard work, dedication, and commitment each of them have shown all season long,” said Lady Eagles coach Andrea Sanders. “This championship is not just a win for us, but a reflection of all of these things. These young ladies earned every bit of this victory, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

The road to the state championship was paved with hard work and resilience. East Prairie first showcased their prowess at the MCCA St. Louis Regional on September 21 at Lindbergh High School, where they secured first place in their division. This victory set the stage for their triumphant performance at the state level.

The team’s victory is a result of both their technical skills and their strong team dynamic.

Emma Harper, a standout who received All-State recognition for both jumps and tumbling, emphasized the importance of chemistry and collaboration.

“Our team’s mindset going into the state competition was definitely chemistry and teamwork,” Harper said. “We left everything we had on the mat that day.”

The path to the championship was fraught with adversity. The team’s journey was hindered by a series of injuries and illnesses that threatened to disrupt their preparation. However, the cheerleaders’ indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication allowed them to overcome these challenges.

“The most challenging things we faced were injuries and sickness,” Harper said. “We had several injuries within weeks of the competition and a cheerleader who competed very ill the day of competition. All the girls were able to work through their pain and illness and persevere for the team.”

Olivia Hayes, another key member of the team, highlighted the adversity they overcame. “Three years ago, our team competed with just six girls, yet we still excelled and supported each other,” Hayes said. “Now, to see our program rebuilt with 16 girls in the large category is incredibly meaningful.”

Balancing commitments was another hurdle for the team, as many members were involved in other sports and clubs. However, their ability to manage these responsibilities only strengthened their resolve and made every practice session count.

“Another challenge we faced was balancing the many other sports and clubs our girls are involved in,” Hayes said. “With such a large team this year, finding a way to allow everyone to manage both commitments was difficult at times, but we made it work, and it made every second of practice count.”

For the athletes, representing East Prairie at the state level is a source of immense pride. Harper expressed a deep connection to the legacy of cheerleading in her community, noting that she competed in the same auditorium where her mother once won a state championship in 2001.

“Cheerleading had always been a huge thing in East Prairie,” Harper said. “This weekend, I was able to compete in the exact auditorium that my mom completed in back in 2001, where they also brought home a state championship. I am so proud to be able to carry on the legacy of East Prairie Cheerleading.”

The Lady Eagles’ stunning routines, innovative choreography, and exceptional athleticism have elevated the team to new heights. Their back-to-back state championships are a testament to a relentless pursuit of perfection and their ability to consistently deliver unforgettable performances.
