FARMINGTON, Mo. — Sikeston saw its season come to a close with a 3-1 defeat at Farmington in the semifinals of the MSHSAA Class 4, District 1 Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs (14-7-1) can take pride in a season that saw them overcome challenges and consistently perform at a high level, culminating in their most successful campaign in more than a decade.

“We battled and had several solid chances but fell to a solid side,” said Sikeston coach Gabe Dement. “Shout out to seven amazing seniors that, along with our underclassmen, brought this program back to relevance that we hope to be able to continue in the future.”

The match against Farmington (14-6-0) was a microcosm of Sikeston’s season—full of promise and potential. The Bulldogs started strong, with Tristan Wiggins scoring the opening goal, assisted by PJ Farmer, showcasing the offensive prowess that has been a hallmark of their season.

However, the Knight’s clinical finishing and quick response with two goals in a five-minute stretch before halftime shifted the momentum.

Sikeston continued to press forward, generating several chances in the second half. The aggressive attack was a testament to their never-say-die attitude, even as Farmington extended their lead to 3-1 early in the second half. The Bulldogs’ determination to fight until the final whistle was emblematic of their season-long resilience.

“We stuck with our offense-minded formation and had some chances throughout the second half,” Dement said. “But Farmington’s defense held firm.”

The Bulldogs’ 2024 campaign was marked by significant achievements that underscore the team’s growth and potential. With 14 victories, Sikeston recorded its most wins since 2013, a testament to the team’s hard work and strategic play. Their winning percentage was the highest since 2012, reflecting a consistency and competitiveness that had been elusive in recent years. The offensive unit, led by standout players like Wiggins, averaged 3.8 goals per game, the most prolific scoring rate since the 2011 district championship team.

“We are very proud of the season we had,” Dement concluded. “This was a very fun group of guys to coach and be around. We have a lot to build on and a lot of quality returning players we look forward to building next season’s team.”
