Lady Mules hold off Scott County Central
The Poplar Bluff basketball Lady Mules continued their winning ways on Thursday with a 44-34 win over the Scott County Central Bravettes, improving their home record to 2-0 and their overall record to 5-2 on the season.
“I thought we played hard,” Poplar Bluff coach Soley Dugas said. “It took us a while to get going offensively, but it was still a good test for us to get on our heels a little bit and see if we could compete. I thought they did a great job of coming together and stay solid through the stretch.”
Ireland Gowen had another solid game offensively, dropping 14 points on Thursday after a 12-point performance against Bloomfield/Richland on Monday.
“Ireland has stepped up as a leader this year,” Dugas said. “She’s definitely an asset to us. It kind of hurts us when she gets in foul trouble and has to sit some minutes out, but she plays hard.”
Juju Johnson was also in double figures with 13 points on the game.
It was a low-scoring first half for both teams as the Lady Mules only led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and went into halftime up 19-14.
Scott County Central kept it to within single digits going into the fourth with the Lady Mules up 30-23, but Poplar Bluff went on an 8-4 run in the first four minutes of the fourth and was able to salt the game away.
The Lady Mules will remain busy as 2024 comes to a close with a trip to Notre Dame in Cape Girardeau on next Thursday, followed by the Lady Royals Classic at Twin Rivers the week of Christmas.
“It’ll be huge for us to go into the second semester with some wins under our belt,” Dugas said. “We’ve proven that we can compete so we just got to keep the momentum going.”
