CHAFFEE, Mo. —  Sikeston turned a physical battle into opportunities at the free-throw line, clinching a 63-58 victory over Woodland in the third-place game of the Chaffee Lady Red Lady Invitational on Thursday.

Landri Hammontree was the driving force behind the win, pouring in 35 points, as the Lady Bulldogs (4-4) capitalized on their ability to attack the basketball and draw contact throughout the contest.

“We played together as a team,” said Sikeston coach Vaughn  Shephard. “We communicated well on defense and we rebound the basketball pretty well. We also were able to get penetration and that allowed other players to get open for shots and we scored well in our transition.”

Hammontree was a force at the line, going 15-of-20. Sikeston's ability to get to the charity stripe and capitalize on those opportunities was the key. Hammontree's success at the free-throw line is well-documented; she has held the highest free-throw shooting percentage in the SEMO Conference for the past two seasons, earning her an award each year at the conference awards banquet.

Her performance in this game was a testament to her consistency and skill under pressure.

The Cardinals (3-2), a team that thrives in the paint, posed a significant test.

“Woodland is physical in the paint,” Shephard said. “Our game plan was to front their post and they had a couple of post players that were pretty strong and physical, and that is a challenge for us sometimes, but our girls stepped up to the challenge and were successful.”

Sikeston is back in action on the road at Dexter (2-3) on Thursday, Dec. 19.

"These girls played as a unit today," Shephard concluded. "They showed incredible grit, battling through adversity throughout the game. This was a hard-fought win, and a crucial step towards achieving our goals this season. I'm incredibly proud of my coaching staff – they did an outstanding job – and our players stepped up and delivered when it mattered most."
