KENNETT, Mo. - Kennett students lined up in the student section of the girl’s basketball game, awaiting Alyce Edward’s historic feat.

In their 54-38 victory over Malden, sophomore Alyce Edwards scored her 1,000 career point.

It was six minutes left in the third quarter. Alyce received a pass from her sister Alaina Edwards in the corner. Along with a screen from senior Anekia Farmer, Alyce had just enough space to drain a three-pointer, sending her home crowd into a frenzy. They began waving signs which read, “Alyce Edwards—1,000 points.”

“It felt good,” Alyce said. “I was happy I finally made it to 1,000 points.”

Heading into this matchup, Alyce only needed 20 points to reach 1,000. She would finish with 39 to put her at 1,019 career points.

For her, reaching 1,000 points was an important milestone. However, she still wanted to make sure they won this game.

“I just wanted to play hard,” Alyce said. “I wanted to win so even after I hit 20 points I kept going.”

Alyce has been Kennett's main source of scoring since joining the team her freshman season.

In only her first year, she already broke numerous school records. She currently holds the record for most points scored in a game as a freshman, putting up 43 against New Madrid County Central in 2023.

She also broke the record for total points in a season by any freshman in Kennett history, achieving 645 points.

She is on pace to outdo her freshmen year with 374 points in only 12 games. She is currently averaging 31.2 points per game compared to her freshman season where she averaged 24.8 points per game.

According to head coach Erika Cobb, there was no surprise Alyce would reach 1,000 points. However, she would have never thought anyone could do it as only a sophomore.

“She’s been working hard,” Cobb said. “She’s been a great scorer for us and takes care of the ball. She can shoot and get to the rim. This is a huge accomplishment, especially in only a year and a half. This isn’t even an easy accomplishment to achieve in four years, let alone as only a sophomore.”

En route to her 1,000th point, Alyce started slower than usual, only having six points in the first quarter. This was in part due to Malden’s defense, containing her and denying easy shots.

In fact, Both teams were high on defense and slow to score with the first-quarter score being 11-7.

The defense was something both coaches preached to their teams prior to this competition.

“Compared to what it has been, our defense was much better tonight,” Cobb said. “We were active, moving to our spots, rebounding and the effort was definitely the game changer.”

Now, only 14 points from 1,000, Alyce would begin to pick up the pace in the second quarter where she had 11 points. She closed the half with 17 points, needing only three to reach her goal.

A fast break layup put her within one point, at a 999 career total. Finally, the infamous three-pointer put her over.

With still 12 more regular season games and the post-season, Alyce still has a lot more damage to do.

Kennett’s next match-up will be against Dexter on Monday, Jan. 13. This game will be held at Kennett High School and is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
