Lady Mules pull away late to beat Mehlville
It has often been said he who laughs last, laughs best.
That arguably was true for the Poplar Bluff Lady Mules on Monday night, as they used a strong fourth quarter to turn a one-point lead over Mehlville with eight minutes to go into a 51-40 win at Mules Gymnasium.
Clinging to a 30-29 lead after three quarters, the Lady Mules (9-8) outscored Mehlville 21-11 in the final eight minutes to shake off Saturday's loss to Dyersburg.
Poplar Bluff won in part because of solid free-throw shooting down the stretch, as the Lady Mules hit seven of their nine foul shots in the final period and were 20-for-23 at the charity stripe for the game.
Julissa Johnson had a big night for the Lady Mules, scoring a team-high 15 points, while Ireland Gowen added 13 and Jadyn Brandon finished with 10. Both Brandon and Johnson scored six points apiece in the fourth quarter to key the team's final surge to the win. Gowen also had 14 rebounds for her third double-double in a row.
For the game, Poplar Bluff held a 25-20 edge on the boards.
Jessica Castaldi scored a game-high 23 points to pace Mehlville.
The Lady Mules are back in action Thursday when they head to Holcomb.
